What is an Essential Oil?
Essential oils are
natural aromatic compounds found in the various components of plants. Essential
oils can be powerfully fragrant, and effective in a variety of applications. If
you have ever squeeze the peel of a ripe orange and enjoyed the fragrant remains
on your hand, you have experienced the aromatic qualities of essential oils.
Essential oils are
phyto-chemicals made up of organic compounds. They are very clean and crisp to
the touch and are instantly absorbed by our skin. Pure and unadulterated essential
oils are transparent and range in color from crystal clear to deep brown.
In addition to their
intrinsic benefits to people, essential oils have been used throughout times
past for their medicinal and therapeutic benefits. Today’s trends towards more
well-rounded approaches to good health are health care are initiating a new
appreciation and acceptance of essential oils.

is considered to have strong anti-microbial and anti-inflammatory properties.
Sandalwood has been used in Ayurvedic medicine for centuries, traditionally as
a skin tonic. It may be beneficial for both acne and dry skin.

Bergamot is an uplifting, spicy, sweet scent; citrus top
notes with floral undertones the scent is exotic. Inhaled, it is said to relax
the nervous system. Blends well with chamomile, lavender, Neroli, and geranium.
Bergamot is a photosensitizer (increases the skin reaction to sunlight and
makes it more likely to burn) and the photosensitizing effect can last for
several days.

Peppermint is a
menthol fragrance. Aromatherapists use peppermint to help relieve states of

with epilepsy or high blood pressure, and should be avoided in pregnancy.
